How Grand Theft Auto Changed, Game by Game

The Top-Down Years: GTA and GTA 2 (1997 to 1999)
The first game was built by DMA Design in Scotland and viewed from above, like a toy-car chase with real consequences. You took jobs from crime bosses across three cities, and the police chased you harder the more chaos you caused. The idea that you could ignore the missions and just cause trouble was there from the start.
Grand Theft Auto 2 kept the overhead camera but added rival gangs that tracked how you treated them. Work for one faction and another turned hostile. It was a small system, yet it set up the idea of a living criminal underworld that later games would expand.
The 3D Leap: GTA III and Vice City (2001 to 2002)
Grand Theft Auto III, released on PlayStation 2 in 2001, is the game most people point to as the turning point. The camera dropped behind the character, Liberty City became a continuous 3D world, and you could walk, drive, fly and swim through it. Its protagonist never spoke, which kept the focus on the city itself.
Vice City followed a year later with a neon, 1980s Miami-inspired setting (the story takes place in 1986) and a lead character with a voice and a personality. Radio stations full of licensed music became part of the identity. If you want to see how Rockstar is bringing that setting back, our look at the Vice City billboard stunt in Miami shows how it is leaning into the nostalgia.
The Giant Sandbox: San Andreas (2004)
San Andreas scaled everything up. Instead of one city, the map held a fictional state with three cities, countryside and desert in between, set in the early 1990s. The protagonist could change his look, build up skills such as driving and stamina, and fight for gang territory. It felt less like a level and more like a place you lived in, and many fans still call it the series high point for sheer variety.
A Darker, Heavier Liberty City: GTA IV (2008)
Grand Theft Auto IV arrived on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with a new engine and a more serious story about an immigrant trying to escape his past. Cars and characters moved with weight, which made chases feel physical but also less forgiving. It traded some of San Andreas’ silliness and breadth for a tighter, more grounded take on Liberty City, a split that fans still debate.
Three Leads and an Online World: GTA V (2013)
Grand Theft Auto V launched in September 2013 with three playable protagonists who could be switched between on the fly, and set the story in a satirical take on Southern California. Heist missions let players plan and carry out jobs in stages. A few weeks later, GTA Online went live and turned the world into a shared space that Rockstar has kept updating for years.
The game was then re-released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, PC and, later, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. That long life is a big reason the wait for the next game felt so long.
The Long Wait and GTA VI (2023 to 2026)
Rockstar released the first GTA VI trailer in December 2023, after a leak forced its hand. It confirmed a return to Vice City inside the state of Leonida, with two playable characters, Lucia and Jason. A second trailer followed in 2025. The release date has moved before, and the current target is November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.

What Changed Across the Series
- Camera: overhead in 1997 and 1999, behind the character from 2001 onward.
- World size: from three separate cities to a single connected city, then an entire state.
- Story: from a silent lead to fully voiced protagonists, and from one hero to several.
- Multiplayer: from none to a persistent online world in 2013.
- Tone: from cartoon crime to grounded drama and back to satire.
Bottom Line
Each major GTA release did one big thing the genre then copied: 3D freedom in GTA III, personality in Vice City, scale in San Andreas, weight in GTA IV and a living online world in GTA V. GTA VI has a lot to live up to, but a clear pattern to follow: pick one leap and nail it.
FAQ
Which GTA game should I play first?
Grand Theft Auto V is the easiest entry point because it is the most recent and runs on current hardware. If you want the older games, San Andreas and Vice City are the most popular classics, though their controls feel dated.
Do I need to play the older games to understand GTA VI?
No. Each GTA game tells its own standalone story, so you can start with GTA VI without any background. Playing Vice City first only adds a few nostalgic nods.
When does GTA VI come out?
Rockstar and Take-Two have set November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. A PC version has not been announced. Release dates can change, so check official Rockstar channels before pre-ordering.
